Running my home on solar battery storage has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10 kWh battery alongside my rooftop solar panels last spring, mainly because my utility’s evening rates had become painfully expensive. Before the battery, I was sending plenty of midday solar power back to the grid and then buying electricity again after sunset. It felt wasteful.

Now, the system charges from my solar panels during the day and discharges between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when rates are highest. On sunny days, the battery usually covers cooking, lights, the refrigerator, television, and our evening air-conditioning use. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to between $75 and $95 during the summer. The exact savings vary with weather, but avoiding those peak-hour prices has made the biggest difference. I still pull electricity from the grid overnight, so I’m not pretending the house is completely off-grid.

My setup uses a growatt storage plus inverter and lithium battery. The app is useful for checking the battery state of charge, solar production, and daily energy flow, although I don’t obsess over the numbers anymore. I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month: the battery stopped discharging in the evening. The app showed a communication warning, so I shut down the inverter and battery according to the manual, waited a few minutes, and restarted them. Everything came back normally. It turned out to be a loose communication cable, not a battery failure.

The main practical benefit is predictability. Even when electricity prices rise, I can use stored solar energy during the expensive hours. I also like having backup power for short outages, although my battery does not run every circuit in the house. For me, solar battery storage has been less about energy independence and more about using the solar power I already generate instead of giving most of it away cheaply.
