2kWh of lithium battery capacity changed how I use my solar system more than I expected. Before adding storage, my panels sent most afternoon power back to the grid, while we bought electricity during the expensive evening period. I installed a wall-mounted solar battery in the utility room, with an inverter and monitoring app. The electrician finished the wiring in an afternoon, but setting the app tariff schedule took me longer.
On sunny days, the panels usually fill the battery by about 2:30pm. From there, the battery supplies our refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the evening peak. I deliberately shifted laundry and dishwasher use into the daytime, so the stored energy lasts later. The first full month, my utility bill fell from roughly $168 to $103, despite similar weather and household habits. That is about $65 saved, and it feels worthwhile.
My favorite practical feature is the battery reserve setting. I keep twenty percent held back for outages, although I have only tested it during two short blackouts. One evening, the monitoring app showed the state of charge stuck at 6%, and the inverter stopped discharging. I initially panicked, assuming the lithium battery had failed. After checking the breaker and restarting the inverter, I found that I had accidentally enabled a conservative low-voltage cutoff while experimenting with settings. Restoring the default cutoff brought everything back within a few minutes. That small scare taught me to label settings and save screenshots before changing anything. The app also reports cell voltage balance and temperature, while the integrated 12v bms protects the pack from overcharge.
I am not energy independent, but my evening grid use is noticeably lower. The battery has made solar power feel useful after sunset, not merely something exported at noon. That alone justifies the investment.
