0ne winter morning I noticed our house was still running from stored solar power at 6:30, even though the panels were quiet under a gray sky. That small moment convinced me the battery was doing what I had hoped: moving sunshine from the afternoon into the expensive evening hours. We installed a 200 amp lithium ion battery last spring, mainly because our utility's time-of-use rate jumps sharply after 4 p.m. I was tired of watching the meter spin fastest when everyone came home, cooked dinner, and charged phones.
Before installation our electricity bill averaged about $185 per month during summer. We still pay a connection fee and buy some grid power, but the last three bills have landed between $112 and $128. That is roughly $60 to $73 saved monthly without changing our routine. The biggest difference comes from discharging around 5 p.m. and carrying us through dinner, laundry, and the first part of the night. By bedtime the battery usually sits near 25 percent, enough reserve for outages. Good.
My one frustrating moment happened during a week of rain. The battery stopped discharging at 62% and the monitoring app showed a warning about low temperature. I initially assumed something was broken, but the installer explained that the system had paused output to protect the cells. I checked the outdoor cabinet and found its ventilation grille partly blocked by leaves. After brushing them away and restarting the inverter, everything returned to normal. Since then I added a monthly check.
What I appreciate is that this solar battery has become boring, which is exactly what I wanted. I simply check the state of charge before a cloudy day and let the energy storage system handle the schedule. For my home, predictable peak-hour savings matter more than graphics or promises of energy independence.
