Running my solar battery system through a full summer has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed a Growatt inverter with a 10kWh lithium battery last May, mainly to use more of my rooftop solar after sunset. The setup was fairly straightforward, although my installer spent extra time balancing the battery settings with our older electrical panel. I specifically chose the growatt 3 kw configuration because our house is small and our daytime solar production rarely exceeds that level.
Most evenings, the battery charges from solar by late afternoon. Once the sun goes down, I run the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television from stored energy instead of buying expensive grid power. Before storage, my utility bill averaged about $145 during summer. After installation, it has usually landed between $72 and $88. The exact savings depend on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use, but cutting evening peak consumption is the noticeable difference. On a sunny day, I sometimes reach bedtime with roughly 30% remaining, so I am not draining the battery completely every night.
My only real hiccup happened during a week of heavy rain. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, but the house was still drawing from the grid after sunset. I restarted the inverter, checked the backup reserve setting, and discovered it had been set to 30% rather than 10%. That protected reserve was useful during an outage, but it also limited normal evening discharge. After changing the setting, the battery began working normally again. The app could explain the problem better, though; I initially thought the battery itself was failing.
Overall, I am pleased with the solar storage investment. It has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made costs more predictable and reduced dependence on peak grid rates. For me.
