15kw battery storage

5pm used to be the time I dreaded most on my electricity bill. That was when our household demand climbed: cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and switching on the heat pump. Since installing a 15kw battery storage system, those hours feel completely different.

The battery charges from our rooftop solar during the day, then supplies the house when the sun goes down. Before installation, our evening electricity regularly cost around $3 to $5, depending on the season. Now, on a normal sunny day, the battery covers nearly all of our evening usage. Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35%, although winter savings are smaller because the solar panels produce less and the heating runs longer.

The most noticeable benefit is that I no longer worry about using appliances after sunset. I can cook, do laundry, and charge devices without immediately drawing expensive peak-rate power from the grid. The battery monitoring app shows the solar battery charging around lunchtime and discharging after dinner, which makes the savings easy to understand.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first week. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the settings and found that the backup reserve had been set unusually high during commissioning. Lowering that reserve restored normal operation, and the installer talked me through it over the phone. Since then, the system has been quiet and reliable.

I still use some grid electricity during cloudy stretches, so this is not complete energy independence. However, combining solar panels, battery storage, and time-of-use pricing has made a practical difference. The 15kw battery storage capacity is more than enough for our evening routine, and having backup power during short outages is an extra comfort. For me, the biggest win is predictable energy use: most of our daytime solar now gets used at home instead of being exported cheaply.
