roypow battery

Our solar setup has been running for about eight months, and the biggest change has been how little electricity we buy after sunset. We installed a roypow battery alongside our rooftop panels because our utility charges much more during the 4–9 p.m. peak window.

The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, added an inverter, and connected it to the existing solar system and home panel. The only awkward part was waiting for utility approval, which took nearly three weeks. Once permission came through, the monitoring app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in one place. I spent the first few days checking it far too often, but now I mostly leave it alone.

On a sunny day, the panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Around 4 p.m., the battery switches from charging to discharging, so the oven, refrigerator, lights, and Wi-Fi run on stored solar energy instead of expensive grid power. The difference is obvious on our bill: before storage, our peak usage made winter bills especially painful. Now our monthly electricity cost is typically $60–$90 lower, depending on weather and how much cooking we do. It is not a magical zero bill, but it feels good seeing the battery cover the evening instead of selling cheap midday solar back to the grid.

I did have a scare during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 28%, and the app displayed a reserve warning. I learned that I had set a backup reserve, so it was protecting power for an outage rather than malfunctioning. That lesson made me more confident.
