Solution Solar Battery
Most evenings, I used to watch my electricity meter climb between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility’s peak rates were highest. Since adding a 10 kWh solar battery to our rooftop solar system, that routine has changed. The battery charges from excess solar during the afternoon, then powers our refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and heat-pump water heater after sunset. On sunny days, I usually avoid buying much electricity during peak hours, and my monthly bill has dropped by roughly $70 to $95 compared with the same months last year.
The savings are not perfectly consistent. Cloudy weeks still require grid power, and running the clothes dryer and oven together can drain the battery faster than expected. I have learned to start laundry before dinner or check the battery state of charge in the app first. That small habit makes a noticeable difference.
My system uses a lithium iron phosphate battery with a hybrid inverter, and the monitoring screen has been especially useful. It shows solar production, household consumption, battery charging, and grid import in fairly simple graphs. One evening, the battery stopped discharging even though it showed 62% capacity. I restarted the inverter according to the installer’s instructions, but the issue returned the next day. The installer found that a backup-load setting had been changed during a firmware update. They corrected it remotely, and the battery has worked normally since.
I also like that the battery gives us limited backup power during outages. It will not run our whole house indefinitely, but it keeps the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights operating without the noisy portable generator we used before. The bms smart monitoring helps protect the cells and gives me reassurance when the system is working hard.
For me, the biggest benefit is not energy independence every day. It is using more of my own solar power and avoiding expensive evening electricity when it matters most.
