I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last autumn, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. Before adding storage, my solar panels produced plenty during the day, but our household used most power after work, when rates were highest. The battery has changed that pattern more than I expected.

On a sunny day, the panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the battery runs our refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine. I set it to reserve 20 percent capacity for outages, then let it discharge during peak hours. My evening grid usage dropped from roughly 8–10kWh to 2–3kWh, depending on cooking and heating. Our monthly bill fell by about $55 in spring and nearly $80 during the more expensive summer months. Those savings made the lifepo4 battery price easier to justify, although I still think the payback period depends heavily on local electricity rates.

The most useful feature has been the battery monitoring app. I can see solar production, household consumption, charging status, and battery state of charge without walking out to the garage. I did have one minor scare: the battery stopped discharging one evening even though it showed 47 percent remaining. The inverter displayed a communication warning. I shut down the system using the proper sequence, checked the data cable, and restarted it after a few minutes. Everything returned to normal. It turned out to be a loose connection rather than a failed battery.

After several months, I am happiest with the quiet, automatic operation. I do not think about the solar battery every day; I simply notice that the meter moves much more slowly at night. It has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made my existing solar system far more useful, especially during peak-rate hours.
