2 months ago, I added a 12v lifepo4 battery to my small rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop sending cheap afternoon electricity back to the grid. My array is only 3.6 kW, and before the battery I was exporting power around lunchtime, then buying it back at a much higher rate after dinner.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. I placed the battery in a ventilated utility cupboard, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and had an electrician check the isolation, fuses, and battery management system. The first evening, the inverter app showed the battery charging at 1.8 kW. Seeing that stored energy run the refrigerator, lights, router, and washing machine later that night was surprisingly satisfying.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. On weekdays, our expensive period runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Before storage, that window cost me roughly $2.40 to $3.00 per day in grid electricity. Now the battery usually covers most of it, provided the day was reasonably sunny. My average daily bill has fallen by about $65 per month, although winter savings are noticeably smaller because the solar panels rarely fill the battery.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging at 93 percent for two days. The app showed no fault, but the inverter settings had a conservative charge-voltage limit enabled. My installer adjusted it, and the battery returned to normal without resetting anything. I also learned not to judge performance by one cloudy day.
So far, this solar battery has felt practical rather than magical. It does not eliminate my bill, but it shifts my own solar power into the hours I actually need it. For me, that peak-rate reduction is the reason the storage investment makes sense. I would make this choice again for our home.
