Nearly every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter climb when the sun went down. We had solar panels, but after dinner the house was running on expensive grid power: lights, cooking, the heat-pump, and sometimes the washing machine. I finally added a 10 kWh home battery, and the difference has been most noticeable during those peak-rate hours.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage and placed the inverterandbattery system where the existing solar inverter had been. They spent most of the morning checking cable routes, updating the monitoring app, and explaining the settings. I chose “self-consumption” mode, so daytime solar charges the battery first, then the battery supplies the house after sunset. That simple change suits our routine surprisingly well.
In the first full month, our evening usage fell from the grid by roughly 8 kWh per day. Our utility’s peak period is 4–9 p.m., and the battery usually carries us through nearly all of it. My bill dropped by about $65 compared with the same season last year, although I know weather and our habits affect that comparison. We still pull power from the grid on cloudy days, and I avoid running the dryer late at night because I do not want to empty the battery before morning.
One small hiccup happened during a firmware update: the app showed the battery as offline while the house continued working normally. I restarted the communications gateway, and the connection returned after a few minutes. Since then, the battery storage system has been quiet and predictable. I like that I can check state of charge from the sofa, but the real benefit is less dependence on peak electricity—not flashy technology, just a lower bill and more useful solar power at home.
