After six months of using my solar battery, the biggest difference has been how much less electricity I buy during peak hours. I installed a 5 kWh lithium battery beside my inverter, mainly to store excess power from my rooftop solar panels during the afternoon. Before that, my house was exporting energy at lunchtime and then pulling expensive grid power after dinner, which always felt backwards.
Now, the battery charges through the day while the panels are producing well. Around 4 p.m., it switches to battery power, and it usually runs my refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine until bedtime. I still use grid electricity on cloudy days, but my evening consumption has dropped noticeably. My monthly bill fell from roughly $145 to between $80 and $95, depending on the weather. That saving is more useful to me than the impressive solar production figures on the monitoring app.
I spent a lot of time comparing lithium iron phosphate batteries with cheaper lead-acid options. My only real troubleshooting moment happened during the first week. The battery stopped discharging overnight because the inverter’s minimum reserve had accidentally been set to 40 percent. I lowered the reserve to 20 percent, restarted the system, and everything worked normally. I now keep that reserve for outages, rather than trying to drain the battery completely.
The system has not eliminated my bill, but it has made solar energy much more practical. I check the battery state most mornings, and seeing it carry the house through the expensive evening period is still satisfying.
