Running our home on solar power felt straightforward until I started watching the evening electricity bill climb. Last summer, I added a greensun battery storage unit to the rooftop solar system, mainly to avoid buying power during peak hours.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and configured a reserve level so I would still have backup power during an outage. I chose a 20% reserve. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. Then it takes over after sunset, running the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and sometimes our heat pump.
The biggest difference shows up between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when my utility charges the highest rate. Before storage, I would see the meter pulling from the grid almost immediately after dinner. Now the battery covers that period most nights. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $190 to $115 during the first full month, even though we used the air conditioner more than usual. It is not a magical zero bill, but saving around $75 per month has made the battery feel worthwhile.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery offline while the house was still powered normally. I rebooted the monitoring gateway, waited a few minutes, and restored the connection without calling support. Since then, I check the state of charge before bed rather than relying blindly on notifications.
For me, the practical win is quiet and predictable: solar panels fill the battery, the battery handles peak demand, and the grid becomes backup instead of the default.
