2 summers ago, I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but our cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning happened after sunset.
Solar power runs the house during the day, and any surplus charges the battery to 100 percent. Around 4 p.m., the system switches to battery power automatically. I usually get through dinner, lights, television, and the refrigerator without pulling much from the grid. Before storage, my summer bills were often around $180. They now sit closer to $95, although weather and utility rates make the exact savings vary. The battery does not eliminate my bill, but avoiding the evening peak rate is where it earns its keep.
I also use a 12v compressor rv refrigerator in the garage when I am preparing for camping trips. It is a small load, yet I noticed it cycling overnight from the battery rather than the grid. I set the battery reserve at 25 percent, so there is still backup capacity if a storm knocks out power.
My only real troubleshooting moment happened during the first hot week. The battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I found that the inverter had entered a temperature-protection mode because the utility closet was poorly ventilated. Adding a small vent fan and moving a box away from the equipment solved it. Since then, I check the battery temperature and state of charge in the monitoring app every few days.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely think about the solar battery now; I just notice fewer peak-hour charges and more predictable bills. For me, storage was worthwhile because I use electricity when solar production is finished.
