Running my evening routine changed when I added a 5kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system. Before that, I generated plenty of power during the day, but I was still buying expensive electricity after sunset. My growatt 3kva inverter now sends surplus solar energy into the battery instead of exporting most of it for little credit.

At first, I watched the monitoring app obsessively. It was satisfying to see the battery charge to 100% around lunchtime, then discharge through our evening peak period. I run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and washing machine from stored power. On sunny days, the battery usually carries us until midnight, and sometimes there is still 20–30% remaining by morning. That has made the biggest difference to my daily bill: our peak usage has dropped sharply, and the monthly bill is roughly 35% lower than before installation.

The most useful feature has been the battery reserve setting. I keep 25% capacity protected for outages, rather than chasing every last unit of savings. We had a short blackout during a storm, and the transfer was quick enough that the router never restarted. It was a small moment, but it made me trust the system more.

I did have one troubleshooting issue. The inverter showed a battery communication warning after a firmware update. I powered down the system, checked the cable connections, and restarted the battery controller. The warning disappeared, although I now avoid updating anything unless I have time to watch it afterward.

For me, solar storage is less about being completely off-grid and more about shifting when I use electricity. I buy grid power in winter, but this battery makes my solar investment feel practical.
