Using our solar battery after dinner has changed the way I think about electricity. We installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly because our utility's evening rates are painfully high. Before deciding to buy lithium iron phosphate battery, I compared a few chemistries and cared less about fancy app features than usable capacity, warranty, and whether the system could handle our refrigerator during an outage.
The installation was easier than I expected, although it was not completely painless. The battery sits beside the garage, connected to our hybrid inverter and rooftop solar. The installer spent most of the afternoon checking the wiring, setting the backup reserve, and explaining the monitoring app. I set the reserve at 25 percent, so the battery normally discharges during peak hours but keeps enough energy for a short power cut.
That setting has made the biggest difference to our bill. On sunny days, the panels charge the solar energy storage system by early afternoon. Around 4 p.m., when rates jump, the battery takes over cooking, lighting, Wi-Fi, and the heat-pump water heater. Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly $55 to $75, depending on weather and how much air-conditioning we use. It is not total energy independence, but seeing the evening consumption nearly disappear on the utility graph is genuinely satisfying.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging for one evening. The app showed “standby,” even though the charge level was 82 percent. I restarted the inverter, checked that time-of-use scheduling was still enabled, and contacted support. They pushed a settings correction remotely, and it worked the next day.
For me, the real value is predictable peak-hour savings and quiet backup power. The lithium battery requires no daily attention, and so far reliably.
