Last spring, I had a 9.6-kWh home battery installed alongside my rooftop solar system, and the change has been most noticeable after sunset. Before the installation, I regularly bought expensive electricity between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., especially when cooking dinner and running the dishwasher. Now the battery stores surplus solar power during the day and supplies our house through those peak hours.
The setup itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer from elektroumbau mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and programmed a 20% backup reserve. I spent the first evening watching the monitoring app like a child with a new toy. Seeing solar generation fall while battery output rose felt oddly satisfying.
The biggest practical win is our evening bill. In July, we used 11.4 kWh from the battery after sunset, leaving only a small amount of grid electricity on the meter. Our daily charge dropped by roughly $2.50–$3.00, depending on weather and how much laundry we ran. That does not sound huge, but across a month it was about $78, and the battery also kept us comfortable during a short outage.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 100%, yet it was still pulling a little power from the grid. I discovered the dishwasher had started during a cloudy morning, before the battery schedule switched to solar priority. After changing that setting and restarting the inverter, the readings made sense again. No technician visit was needed.
I am particularly glad I chose a system with clear battery state-of-charge data rather than relying on guesswork. I check it once or twice a week, mostly to adjust the reserve before storms. Expansion is possible, but for now this capacity covers our normal evening use well. It feels practical.
