Solution Solar Inverter
2 years ago, I installed a small solar battery system after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening. My setup uses rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and a 12v 100a lifepo4 battery bank in the garage. I chose LiFePO4 because I wanted something safer and longer-lasting than the old lead-acid batteries I had considered.
The biggest difference has been peak-hour savings. Before the battery, our electric company charged the highest rates from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when we were cooking dinner, running lights, using the television, and charging devices. Now the solar panels charge the battery during the afternoon, and the inverter automatically switches the house to battery power when the expensive period begins.
On a typical sunny day, the battery covers most of our evening use. My daily grid consumption dropped by roughly 6 to 8 kilowatt-hours, depending on the weather. That usually saves me around $2 to $3 per day during the warmer months. It may not sound dramatic, but over a month it has reduced my bill by about $65, and I notice the difference most during summer.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery state of charge kept falling lower than expected, and I initially thought the solar charge controller was failing. After checking the monitoring app, I realized the battery reserve setting had been raised accidentally during a firmware update. I lowered the reserve from 30% to 15%, and normal charging returned the next sunny day.
I have learned that battery performance depends heavily on settings, weather, and household habits. I avoid running the clothes dryer during peak hours and save that load for midday solar production. The system has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made our energy use more predictable, and the backup power during short outages is an added comfort.
