Running my home on solar power became noticeably easier after I added a battery storage system, especially during the evening peak period.

My setup is ordinary: rooftop solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a Growatt battery in the garage. The installer described it as a growatt 5 option, and I mainly chose it because the capacity suited our evening usage without needing a larger solar battery. During sunny days, the panels run the house first and send generation into the battery. After sunset, the battery takes over for lights, cooking, the refrigerator, and our heat-pump water heater.

The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our electricity rate is highest. Before battery storage, we would come home, turn on the oven, and immediately start buying expensive grid power. Now the battery usually covers that stretch. Our monthly bill has fallen by roughly 30 to 40 percent, although the saving depends on cloudy weather and how much cooking we do. I like checking the monitoring app and seeing that our evening consumption came from stored solar rather than the grid.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. For two nights, the battery stopped discharging at around 20 percent, even though I expected it to run lower. It turned out the backup reserve setting had been increased during a software update. I changed the reserve level in the inverter settings, and normal operation returned. That issue taught me not to assume the battery was faulty before checking the settings.

After several months, the system feels less like exciting new equipment and more like a dependable appliance. I still watch the weather and adjust charging habits, but the benefit is simple: more of my own solar energy stays in the house, and fewer peak-rate units appear on the bill.
