I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring because rates rose. Our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we were still buying power between 5 and 9 p.m., exactly when cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning piled up. The battery changed that pattern more than I expected.
The installation itself was straightforward. The electrician mounted the lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage beside the inverter, added a subpanel, and set the app to charge from solar first. I had also bought an xiamen lithium battery charger for an off-grid shed battery. I kept it separate from the storage unit; the capacities and charging controls were different. That saved me an expensive mistake.
Usually, the battery reaches 100% by early afternoon. Around dinner, the house runs from stored solar instead of the grid. My utility statements show it: before the battery, our summer bills averaged about $210; after installation, they usually land near $95, despite similar air-conditioning use. That is roughly $115 saved in a month. I am not pretending the battery paid for itself quickly, but watching the evening consumption graph flatten is satisfying.
My favorite feature is the reserve setting. I keep 25% in reserve for outages, while the rest handles peak-hour use. We have had two outages since installation, and the lights and refrigerator stayed on. The first time, I noticed because the inverter app sent a notification.
I did have one troubleshooting moment: the battery stopped discharging after a firmware update. Restarting the inverter did nothing, but switching the operating mode from “backup only” to “self-consumption” fixed it. Since then, I check firmware notes before accepting updates. For me, the biggest benefit is not independence; it is using my own solar power later, when my household actually needs it.
