Solution Solar Inverter
Honestly, installing my home battery was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician connected a 10kWh LiFePO4-cell storage battery to my rooftop solar inverter, added a hybrid inverter controller, and set the battery to charge from solar during the afternoon. My main goal was simple: avoid buying expensive grid power between 4pm and 9pm.
Before the installation, my evening electricity use was usually around 8kWh, especially when cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and charging our car. During the first full week, my utility app showed the battery covering nearly all of that usage. Instead of importing power at the peak rate, my house ran from stored solar energy. My bill dropped by about $38 that month, which is more noticeable than I expected from one appliance change.
I did have one small scare. After a cloudy day, the battery stopped discharging at 6pm even though the monitoring screen said it was 62% full. I checked the settings and found that backup reserve had accidentally been set to 60% during a firmware update. Lowering it to 20% fixed the issue, and the battery immediately started supporting the house. I now check the reserve after every software update.
One practical lesson is that battery capacity matters more than flashy specifications. I compared several options, including cheap lifepo4 cells, but chose a professionally assembled pack with a warranty, battery management system, and proper thermal protection. The price was higher, yet I wanted dependable cycle life rather than troubleshoot individual cells myself.
After three months, my solar self-consumption has risen from roughly 45% to 82%. I still pull power from the grid in winter, but peak charges are much smaller. The best part is automatic operation: I rarely think about it. I see the battery charge in daylight and carry us through dinner.
