Ever since I installed a solar battery at home last spring, my evening electricity routine has changed more than I expected. Before that, our rooftop panels sent excess power straight back to the grid, and we still bought expensive electricity after sunset. Now the battery stores that daytime energy and runs most of our house through dinner and the first part of the night.
The biggest difference has shown up on my bill. Our utility’s peak period runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when I used to cook, run the dishwasher, and charge phones and laptops. With the battery set to discharge during those hours, our monthly electricity charges dropped by roughly 30–35%. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather and how much heating we use, but seeing the battery cover 5–7-kilowatt evening loads feels genuinely useful. I also shifted laundry and water heating to sunny afternoons, which keeps the state of charge healthier and reduces grid imports further.
Setup was less intimidating than I expected. An installer mounted the lithium-ion battery in the garage, connected it to the solar inverter, and added monitoring through an app. I had been searching for a dewalt inverter because I like their tools, but my installer explained that my existing hybrid inverter was already compatible with the battery. That saved me from replacing equipment I didn’t need. The app shows solar production, battery charge, and grid usage in near real time, although its notifications are occasionally late.
My only small troubleshooting moment happened during a two-day rainy spell. The battery reached its reserve setting earlier than usual, and I initially thought something was wrong. A quick look at the app showed the system had simply switched to backup reserve and was protecting the remaining charge. I lowered the reserve and restored it.
