I installed a lithium deep cycle 24v battery beside my inverter last summer, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system is only 5.2 kW, and before adding storage, the panels stopped helping just when our household started cooking, washing dishes, and running the heat pump.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected the battery management system, and configured the inverter to charge from solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m. I spent the first week watching the monitoring app like a nervous parent. On sunny days, the battery usually reached 95 to 100 percent by midafternoon. By bedtime, it was commonly around 35 percent, depending on whether we used the oven.
The savings have been the most noticeable benefit. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so shifting roughly 8 to 11 kWh into those expensive hours cut our monthly bill from about $190 to $128 during the first full month. It is not a magic zero-dollar bill, because cloudy weather still forces some grid charging, but the solar battery has made our usage much less exposed to peak rates. I also like seeing the house run quietly from stored solar instead of hearing the meter race whenever dinner starts.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging after a firmware update, even though the app showed plenty of capacity. Power-cycling the inverter fixed it, and the installer later adjusted the communication settings. Since then, performance has been steady.
After several months, I would make the same purchase again. The biggest practical change is not dramatic independence; it is predictable evening power and a smaller bill. It now feels like ordinary household equipment, not a complicated science project.
