I installed a solar battery system last spring after watching my evening electricity bills climb. My setup uses rooftop solar, a 10kWh lithium battery, and a victron multiplus 12 3000 inverter/charger. I chose it mainly for backup and peak-hour savings, rather than chasing complete energy independence.
During sunny days, the panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Once the utility rate jumps in the evening, my house runs from stored power instead of the grid. That includes the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes my induction cooker. I still buy electricity on cloudy days, but my monthly bill has dropped noticeably. Before storage, I averaged around $180 during months; lately, I am closer to $110-$125, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. The battery does not erase the bill, but avoiding those expensive evening hours makes the difference I can see.
My one hiccup happened during a power outage. The inverter switched over quickly, but the battery stopped discharging after about ten minutes. I found that I had accidentally left a high-wattage space heater plugged in. It exceeded the output I had configured, not a failed battery. After unplugging it, the system recovered immediately. That incident taught me to treat the battery as a limited home energy reserve, not an unlimited generator.
Now I check the Victron monitoring app a few days, especially before storms. I keep essential circuits prioritized and avoid running the microwave and kettle together during an outage. For my household, the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and load shifting has been worthwhile.
