Solution Solar Inverter
3:17 p.m. used to be the moment I started checking our electricity app, because that’s when our utility’s peak rate kicked in. Since we added a home solar battery last spring, I mostly stop thinking about it. The battery charges from our rooftop panels through the afternoon, then carries the house through dinner and the evening.
The difference is easiest to notice when the oven, dishwasher, and washing machine are all running. Before, I would avoid doing laundry after work or wince when the air conditioner ran past sunset. Now I don’t have to schedule family life around the utility’s time-of-use rates. I still try to run the dishwasher before bed, but it’s a preference, not a little financial emergency.
I was skeptical about the savings at first. Our monthly bill hasn’t disappeared, especially in cloudy weeks, but the expensive evening electricity we buy from the grid has fallen noticeably. Looking at the bill over several months, rather than one sunny day, made the improvement feel real. We also keep a modest backup reserve for outages, so the battery doesn’t always empty itself completely overnight.
Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer explained the monitoring app and showed me how to set the reserve, but I needed a few days to trust the energy flow screen. One evening, the app showed the battery discharging while the grid was still supplying power. I thought something had gone wrong, then realized a high reserve setting and a brief cloud cover were affecting what I was seeing. A quick check of the settings cleared it up; no service call needed.
I even saved the installer’s note labeled “832006172” in my phone, so I can find the setup details quickly. For me, it’s simply cooking dinner without worrying about every kilowatt-hour anymore.
