Solution Solar Battery
I installed my solar battery system last spring after getting tired of watching evening electricity rates climb. My setup uses rooftop solar, a 10kWh lithium battery, and a victron multiplus inverter charger. The installation was less dramatic than I expected, although the electrician spent most of a day tracing an old circuit that fed my refrigerator and internet equipment. Once everything was configured, the battery automatically charged from excess solar during the afternoon and carried the house through the expensive evening period.
Before storage, I regularly ran the dishwasher, washing machine, and heat-pump water heater after dinner. That habit pushed me into peak pricing almost every weekday. Now I check the monitoring app around 4:30, and usually see the battery at 95% or 100%. It switches over quietly at sunset, and we use stored energy until about 10:30 p.m. My average evening consumption is roughly 3kWh, so the battery often still has a reserve when cheaper overnight power begins. My utility bills have fallen by about 28%, even though our total usage is similar. That is not a spectacular off-grid transformation, but it is noticeable in the monthly budget and makes the solar panels much more useful.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week when the battery reached 12%. I received a low-state warning and briefly worried something had failed. The victron multiplus was fine; it had simply switched to grid power as designed. I cleaned a dusty communications connector, restarted the monitoring gateway, and the readings returned. Since then, I have paid closer attention to reserve settings rather than chasing maximum battery discharge every night. Keeping a small backup reserve also means the refrigerator and modem stay running during short outages. For me, the biggest win is not independence; it is the quiet reduction in nightly grid purchases.
