Running my home from stored sunlight has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly because our utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m., exactly when everyone gets home and starts cooking.
On sunny days, the battery charges from the rooftop panels by early afternoon. At 4 p.m., the battery inverter switches our house over automatically, so the oven, heat pump, and washing machine use stored power instead of expensive grid electricity. I still buy a little electricity overnight, but our evening consumption has dropped noticeably. My bills went from roughly $190 to $115 in the first month, even though weather and usage were not identical. The biggest saving came during a week of hot weather, when the battery covered nearly all of our air-conditioning between 4 and 9 p.m.
My system is a growatt inverter off grid setup, although I keep grid backup enabled because I do not want to manage every cloudy day manually. The monitoring app shows solar production, battery state of charge, and household load. I enjoy checking it more than I expected, especially seeing the battery discharge curve during dinner.
I did have one small scare. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging and remained at 100 percent. The app showed no obvious fault. I turned off the inverter using the proper shutdown sequence, waited five minutes, and restarted it. Discharge resumed normally. The installer later told me the update had changed a reserve setting from 10 to 30 percent.
That experience taught me not to panic at the first strange reading. I now keep the manual nearby and leave a sensible backup reserve. Overall, home energy storage has made peak-hour electricity less stressful, and the monthly savings are something I can see rather than estimate.
