I installed a 10 kWh home battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our evening routine—cooking, laundry, showers, and charging two phones—regularly pushed us into peak-rate hours. The battery has changed that pattern more than I expected.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I feared. An electrician mounted the storage unit beside the inverter, added a backup circuit for the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and a few outlets, then connected the monitoring app. I chose a LiFePO4 battery because the cycle life and safety reputation mattered more to me than squeezing out the lowest upfront price. The product paperwork described several chemistries, including “li ion li pol lifepo4,” which looked confusing, but my actual system uses lithium iron phosphate.
My best result shows up on the utility bill. Before storage, our summer bill averaged about $185. Last month, with similar solar production, it was $72. I still paid a small grid connection charge, but the battery supplied nearly all our energy from 4 p.m. until bedtime. The app says I’m typically using 6–8 kWh each evening, and I can see the battery discharge during the expensive period instead of exporting cheap solar at midday.
One minor annoyance appeared during the first cold week. The battery stopped charging early in the morning, and I initially thought the solar inverter had failed. A warning in the app explained that charging was paused because the battery temperature was too low. It resumed automatically after the utility-room warmed up, so no technician visit was needed.
I’m not pretending the system has paid for itself yet, but the quieter bills and limited backup power feel worthwhile. I check the state of charge casually, and I’ll eventually expand storage before buying more panels.
