victron hybrid inverter

I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last winter, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My system uses a victron hybrid inverter, and the biggest surprise has been how quickly the battery became part of our normal household routine.

During the day, our rooftop solar panels usually cover the refrigerator, internet equipment, washing machine, and my home office. Any extra solar energy charges the battery instead of being exported for a fairly unimpressive credit. Around 4 p.m., the inverter switches our house over to battery power. We then run the dishwasher, cook dinner, and use lights without pulling much from the grid.

Before adding energy storage, our evening usage was the most expensive part of the bill. In the first full month, our electricity bill dropped from about $210 to $128, even though we had several cloudy days. The following month was closer to $105. I am not claiming the battery pays for itself overnight, but seeing that reduction every month makes the investment feel much more practical. The battery monitor also lets me see exactly how much solar power we are using instead of guessing.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. Nothing was broken; the charge limit had simply reset to a conservative setting. I found the issue in the inverter app, restored the schedule, and everything worked again. That experience taught me to check software settings before assuming there is a wiring or battery fault.

The best part is quiet peace of mind. During a short outage, the lights and Wi-Fi stayed on automatically, and the transition was barely noticeable. I still watch the state of charge during rainy stretches, but overall this solar battery has reduced peak-hour costs, improved our solar self-consumption, and made our household energy use feel far more predictable. It has also encouraged us to run flexible appliances when the sun is shining, which saves even more.
