Nearly eight months ago I had a 9.6 kWh solar battery installed alongside my rooftop panels. My main goal was simple: stop buying expensive evening electricity whenever the sun disappeared.
I chose an inverte hbrido on grid system with a 5 kW hybrid inverter and lithium iron phosphate battery. The installer finished in one day, although getting the monitoring app paired took another evening. That was the only genuinely frustrating part: the app showed the battery at 100%, then suddenly displayed 72% after a firmware update. Support explained it was a calibration issue and walked me through a full charge and discharge. Since then, the state of charge readings have been steady.
The real difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility charges peak rates. Before storage, our typical summer bill was around $185. With the battery and a time-of-use schedule, it has averaged $112 over the past three months. That is roughly $73 saved monthly, though cloudy weeks still hurt.
I set the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge during peak hours. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100% by early afternoon and carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and heat-pump water heater through dinner. I do not notice any noise indoors, and the automatic switchover during a brief outage kept the router running, which felt more valuable than expected.
My one practical lesson is to leave some battery capacity reserved for outages. Initially, I allowed the system to drain completely overnight because I was chasing every possible kilowatt-hour of savings. After one storm caused a six-hour blackout, I changed the backup reserve to 25%. Now I sacrifice a few dollars of monthly savings, but the lights and internet stay on when the grid fails. For my household, that balance makes the solar battery worthwhile.
