Having installed a 5kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery beside my inverter last spring, I finally stopped watching electricity prices with such anxiety. My main goal was simple: use solar energy after sunset instead of sending it back to the grid for a tiny credit.

The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, added a hybrid inverter, and connected it to my existing rooftop solar array. The app showed charge and discharge levels clearly, although I spent an evening adjusting the reserve setting. I keep 20% in reserve now, rather than draining everything for savings, because our neighborhood occasionally loses power during summer storms.

The biggest difference is during peak hours. Before the battery, our air conditioner, refrigerator, and induction cooktop pulled from the grid between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Now the battery carries most of that period. Last month, my utility bill was about $42 lower than the same month last year, despite using the air conditioner more often. I know weather and rates change, so I am not treating that number as a guarantee, but seeing the meter barely move during dinner is genuinely satisfying.

One small annoyance appeared after a cloudy week. The battery stopped charging at 63%, and the app reported a communication warning. I power-cycled the inverter once, checked the Wi-Fi connection, and waited ten minutes. It resumed normally. I also use a three slot 18650 lithium battery charger for small DIY lights and sensors, but that charger is completely separate from the home storage system; I would never substitute it for a certified solar battery charger or alter the main pack myself.

After nine months, the system has been pleasantly boring, which is exactly what I wanted overall.
