Having our rooftop solar battery installed last spring, I expected lower electricity bills, but everyday use surprised me. During sunny afternoons, our solar panels charge the battery instead of sending excess energy to the grid. By dinner, the battery is usually full, and we run the dishwasher, lights, and washing machine from stored power.
The installation was fairly painless. The crew mounted the battery in our garage, beside the electrical panel, and connected it to a three phase inverter. I spent an evening learning the monitoring app, but now I mainly watch the state of charge and tomorrow's weather forecast. If rain is coming, I keep extra capacity for evening use.
At first, I was disappointed when the battery stopped discharging one night at about 18%. The app showed an inverter communication warning. I switched the system off and on using the isolator, waited five minutes, and it recovered. The installer explained that a brief Wi-Fi drop had caused the alert, not a battery failure. Since then, it has happened only once.
The real payoff appears during peak hours. Our utility charges more between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., so I set the battery to discharge then. On an average weekday, I use roughly 6–8 kWh from storage instead of buying expensive grid electricity. My monthly bill fell from around $210 in summer to about $125, though weather and rates vary. That is about $85 saved each month, a number I can actually notice.
I still keep realistic expectations. Cloudy weeks leave less solar energy to charge the battery, and the upfront cost will take years to recover. Still, the system has made our home feel less dependent on price spikes. It shifts solar power into costly hours.
