Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Replacing our old electric water heater wasn't the reason we installed solar, but it became the best test of our battery. We have a small rooftop array with trina panels and a home storage battery, sized mainly to cover evening use rather than run everything off-grid. Before, our household peak rate kicked in around dinner, exactly when the oven, lights, and dishwasher were all on. Now the battery charges from surplus solar during the day, then supplies much of that load after sunset.
The difference shows up most clearly on hot weekdays. In summer, air conditioning pulls energy late afternoon, and I used to watch the meter climb while cooking. With the battery set to prioritize self-consumption, we usually enter the evening with enough stored power to carry the house through dinner and the first part of the night. Our utility bill hasn't vanished; connection charges and cloudy days still count. But the expensive peak-hour imports have fallen noticeably. Comparing bills with the same months last year, I see savings of roughly forty to sixty dollars monthly in the warmer season. It's not a dramatic instant payback story, but it feels good to use power we made instead of buying it back at night.
One small snag was a battery that stopped discharging one evening after a router update. I noticed because the grid import light stayed on, not because the house went dark. The app showed a backup reserve setting higher than I remembered. I lowered it slightly, checked the time-of-use schedule, and watched the battery resume supplying the kitchen load. No installer visit was needed; still, I took a screenshot of the settings in case it happened again. That little hiccup taught me that a storage system isn't completely set-and-forget, especially when software updates alter preferences. I check it monthly now.
