Last summer, I added a home battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because my electricity rates jump sharply between 4 and 9 p.m. The setup includes a Growatt inverter and a battery storage unit, and I usually charge it from excess solar during the afternoon. By dinner time, the house is running from stored energy instead of pulling expensive electricity from the grid.
That change has been more noticeable than I expected. Before installing the battery, my solar panels still left me with fairly high evening bills because we cook, run the dishwasher, and use the air conditioner after sunset. Now the battery carries most of that load. On a typical sunny day, my evening grid usage has dropped to almost nothing. My monthly bill used to sit around $140–$170 during the hottest months; last month it was $62, including the fixed utility charges. I know weather and energy habits affect the result, but the peak-hour savings are real in my house.
One small troubleshooting moment happened a few weeks after installation. The battery stopped discharging even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored power. I checked the settings and found that the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80 percent. The system was protecting that reserve, so it only used a small amount overnight. Lowering the reserve to 25 percent fixed it immediately. I now keep it closer to 30 percent because we occasionally have short outages and I want some emergency capacity.
I searched plenty of battery forums before buying and kept seeing the phrase “tl3s growatt” while comparing models and inverter compatibility. The research helped, but daily use has taught me more than specifications. The biggest benefit is simple: solar power that used to be wasted now covers my expensive evening hours. I check the battery state of charge each morning, but otherwise the system quietly does its job.
