test lithium battery capacity

Early last summer, I installed a 10-kWh lithium battery beside my garage, paired with our rooftop solar and hybrid inverter. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: an electrician mounted the battery, configured the inverter, and walked me through the monitoring app in one afternoon without any rewiring surprises.

What I notice most is the change during peak hours. Before storage, our utility pulled expensive electricity from 4 to 9 p.m., exactly when we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and turned on the air conditioner. Now the solar battery discharges automatically then. On sunny days, our meter barely moves.

Across a typical month, my grid usage dropped from roughly 620 kWh to 310 kWh, although weather and our habits vary. The bill savings are clearest in summer: I used to pay about $190, but recent bills land near $105. That is not total energy independence, yet saving around $85 makes the battery feel practical.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 100 percent, but the inverter was not sending power to the house after sunset that evening. I checked settings and found a scheduled reserve set to 80 percent during commissioning. Lowering that reserve to 20 percent fixed it without calling support.

I also wanted to test lithium battery capacity rather than trust the advertised number. On an evening, I charged it fully, switched off the grid connection through the isolator, and recorded the loads overnight. We used 6.7 kWh before the battery reached its reserve, close enough to the capacity specification.

The biggest lesson is that battery storage works best when I treat it as an energy budget. I avoid starting appliances at once, keep the reserve for outages, and let solar panels refill the battery whenever possible. After several months, the automatic peak-shaving matters more to me than chasing grid independence.
