Solution Solar Battery
Running our solar battery storage system for six months has changed how I think about electricity bills. Before, our rooftop panels mostly helped during daylight, but we still bought expensive power after dinner, exactly when our family was cooking and running appliances.
I chose a 10kWh lithium battery after comparing solar energy storage options. The installer recommended a hybrid inverter, but I specifically asked for a growatt off grid compatible battery because I wanted flexibility if we later added panels or needed backup power during outages. Setup took most of a day. Mounting the battery in our garage was straightforward; the fiddliest part was routing conduit neatly along the wall and connecting the monitoring app.
Since installation, I have programmed the battery to charge from solar first and discharge between 4pm and 9pm. That change made the biggest practical difference. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so the battery covers the oven, dishwasher, lights, and television through the expensive evening window. My average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $110, although weather and usage still affect the total. In sunny months, I have seen the bill dip below $90. It feels worthwhile because the battery uses energy we generated instead of selling it cheaply back to the grid.
I had one minor troubleshooting moment. During a storm, the app showed the battery at 100%, yet the house briefly switched to grid power. I found the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 20%, and the inverter was protecting that reserve. After changing the setting to 30% and restarting the system, it worked properly. I now check the state of charge weekly and keep the reserve higher during storm season.
Overall, I am happiest with predictable peak-hour savings, not flashy app graphs. The battery quietly does its job; meter stays still.
