Running my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity. I had the system installed last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid power between 4 and 9 p.m. My roof array charges the battery through the afternoon, and the energy storage unit takes over when dinner, laundry, and the heat pump would normally push our usage into peak pricing.
The biggest surprise was how quiet and automatic it felt. I only notice the inverter display when I check the app. I specifically paired the setup with my growatt 18000ue inverter, and watching the battery state of charge climb to 100 percent on a sunny day is still oddly satisfying.
Before installing it, our evening electricity bills were the painful part of the month. Afterward, our first full month dropped from about $210 to $138, even though we used the same appliances. The savings vary with weather, of course, but keeping the battery for peak hours makes the difference obvious.
One evening in January, a cold snap drained it earlier than expected. I opened the monitoring app and saw that the heat pump had run almost continuously, while the battery backup reserve was set too high. I lowered the reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent, leaving enough emergency capacity for a short outage, and the next day the system behaved normally.
That small adjustment taught me more than any sales brochure: battery settings matter as much as battery size. I now check the state of charge before unusually cold nights and save heavy laundry for sunny afternoons when possible.
The system has not eliminated my electric bill, and winter solar production is frustrating, but it has made our costs steadier through the year.
