This year, with sunny afternoons, bills have been closer to $85. I still pay connection fees and buy power on cloudy days, so it is not free electricity. Still, avoiding peak rates saves roughly $70–$95 each month in the warmer season.
I also learned that battery habits matter. I run the dishwasher after lunch while solar panels are producing, then let the battery cover lights, the refrigerator, and evening cooking. On hot nights, I set the air conditioner conservatively so it does not drain everything before midnight. That leaves reserve energy for outages.
Friends ask whether surplus lifepo4 batteries are worth considering. My answer is yes, if the inverter and battery management system are properly matched. I have not expanded yet, but the modular design gives me that option. For now, quiet operation, dependable backup, and lower peak-hour usage make the investment feel practical rather than flashy, day after day here.
