I installed a 10-kWh battery beside our inverter last spring, and the surprise has been how much calmer our evening electricity use feels.

Before storage, our solar panels exported their midday production for a modest credit, then we bought power back during the expensive 4-9 p.m. window. After commissioning, I set the battery to charge from solar and discharge during those peak hours. On a normal sunny day, it covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater without pulling anything from the grid.

Our first month showed a smaller bill: $118 instead of $176 the previous year, even though our household routine had not changed. The savings are not identical every month—cloudy weather and a cold snap still push us onto grid electricity—but avoiding peak-rate usage has made the battery feel worthwhile. I estimate it saves around $45–$70 monthly in spring and summer.

The monitoring app is more useful than I expected. I nicknamed the system “ying” because it works quietly in the background while the solar inverter does the visible work. The state-of-charge percentage lets me see whether we can run the oven without starting a grid purchase. I did have a confusing morning when the battery stopped at 31%. The app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally raised while testing backup mode. Once I lowered it to 15%, normal discharge resumed after the next cycle.

That troubleshooting moment taught me not to judge performance from one unusual day. Now I check the reserve level before storms and leave extra capacity for outages. We have not needed a generator since adding the battery, and the automatic switchover is my favorite practical benefit. For our home, solar self-consumption and peak-hour shifting have been more valuable than chasing a perfect zero-grid bill.
