Solution Solar Battery
Yesterday I finally stopped guessing what my solar panels saved and added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to our system. Before, we sent afternoon production to the grid and bought electricity after dinner.
The installation was simpler than expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, installed a hybrid inverter, and explained the monitoring app. It took one day, with an outage during the wiring change. I chose time-of-use settings so the battery charges from solar first and discharges between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. It makes a quiet hum, quieter than our refrigerator.
I watched the battery supply the oven, lights, Wi-Fi router, and heat-pump water heater while the utility meter slowed. Even my hyperice massager ran during a cloudy night without grid power.
The biggest change appeared on the bill. My peak usage window used to cost about $4.80 each evening. After adding storage, that charge usually fell below $1.00, although weather and cooking time matter. My first month dropped from $186 to $112, despite using the air conditioner more often. That is not a zero bill, but the savings feel real.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. During a heatwave, the battery stopped discharging because its temperature sensor reached the protection limit. I restarted the inverter, but nothing changed. The installer said the garage needed ventilation; the system resumed after cooling overnight. Since then I keep the garage door cracked on hot afternoons and check alerts weekly.
What I appreciate most is predictability. The battery shifts solar energy into expensive hours, while the app shows what is happening. If you are considering solar storage, prioritize usable capacity, time-of-use rates, and installer support over flashy promises.
