I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly because my electricity bills were getting painful during the evening peak. Our solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we were still buying grid power when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging two phones and an electric bike. The battery changed that pattern almost immediately.
On a sunny day, the solar inverter now fills the battery by mid-afternoon. From about 4 p.m. until bedtime, our house runs mostly from stored energy. According to my utility app, our peak-hour usage dropped by roughly 70 percent. Before storage, our monthly bill averaged around $165. Since adding the lithium battery system, it has usually landed between $85 and $105, depending on weather and heating use. That is not a dramatic “free electricity” result, but saving about $60 each month feels very real.
The most useful setting has been a reserve of 25 percent. I initially set the backup reserve too high, and the system kept 40 percent locked away even on mild evenings. After lowering it, we used more of our solar battery energy without feeling unprepared for an outage. I still keep a little reserve because our neighborhood loses power during summer storms.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a heavy rain, the battery stopped charging and showed a communication warning.
