Over the past six months, my solar battery has changed the way I use electricity at home. I installed a solis s5 inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery after getting tired of seeing my evening power usage push the monthly bill higher.
The biggest difference is during peak hours. Before the battery, my solar panels stopped helping as soon as the sun went down, which was exactly when we started cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and using lights. Now, the battery stores excess solar energy during the afternoon and discharges it from about 5 p.m. until bedtime. On clear summer days, the house often runs almost entirely from stored solar power in the evening.
My average monthly bill has dropped from around $185 to roughly $75. It is not perfectly consistent because cloudy weather and heating usage still matter, but the peak-hour savings are obvious. I especially notice it when the air conditioner runs after sunset. Instead of buying all that electricity at the expensive rate, we use energy already produced on our roof.
The system has also been pleasantly quiet and hands-off. I check the monitoring app a couple of times a week, mostly to see the battery state of charge and confirm that solar production looks normal. One afternoon, the battery stopped discharging because its reserve setting had been changed during a software update. I raised the usable reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent, and normal operation returned after a restart. It was a minor hassle, but the app made the problem fairly easy to identify.
I still watch our consumption and avoid running multiple heavy appliances at once, but I no longer feel tied to daytime solar production. For me, the battery’s real value is not total energy independence; it is making our renewable energy useful when our household actually needs it.
