I installed my home battery last spring after watching too much of my solar power flow back to the grid at midday. My 6.4-kWh LiFePO4 battery sits in the garage beside the inverter, and the main reason I chose a lifepo4 selbstbau setup was to keep the project affordable without giving up on safe battery storage.
The initial setup was less intimidating than expected, although I spent an entire Saturday checking cable sizes, fuse ratings, and battery management system settings. I mounted the rack, connected the DC isolator, and programmed the inverter to charge from solar first and use grid power only when necessary. That last setting has made the biggest difference to my electricity bill.
Before installation, my evening usage regularly pushed me into the expensive peak tariff window. Now the battery starts discharging around 5 p.m., covering the induction hob, refrigerator, lights, and home office equipment. On sunny days, it often carries us until bedtime without importing much power. My monthly bill dropped from roughly €115 to €72 over the first three comparable months. That is not a dramatic zero-bill result, but it is a very noticeable saving for our household, especially because I did not change our routine.
One practical surprise was how quickly cold weather exposed my original charge settings. During a cloudy week, the battery reached its reserve earlier than I expected, and the inverter briefly switched to grid power several times overnight. Nothing failed: I had simply set the reserve too low at 10 percent. Raising it to 20 percent stopped the annoying cycling and gave me more confidence during gloomy weather.
I also learned to check the battery temperature before blaming the solar panels; a loose garage door had let the room get colder than the manufacturer recommended, so I monitor it carefully.
