I installed my solar battery last spring after watching our afternoon electricity use get more expensive every year. The system is a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery paired with 6.5 kilowatts of rooftop panels. I chose it mainly to avoid buying power during peak hours, but the everyday difference has been more noticeable than I expected.
Before storage, my evening routine was basically checking the utility app and wincing. We would come home, cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and turn on the heat pump just as solar production faded. Those hours regularly cost about $1.10–$1.40, depending on the season. Now the inverter starts charging the battery from midday surplus, and the battery takes over around 4:00 p.m. The change is simple: my highest-use period is mostly supplied by stored energy instead of the grid.
On an average month, my bill dropped from roughly $185 to $115. That is not a dramatic “free power” result—there are cloudy weeks and plenty of fixed utility charges—but saving about $70 each month feels real. In July, with the air conditioner working hard, the battery saved almost $100. I also like seeing the battery state of charge at breakfast and knowing we have a little reserve before sunrise.
My only hiccup happened during a brief outage in November. The lights stayed on, but the battery stopped discharging after about fifteen minutes. The monitoring app showed a communication error between the gateway and inverter. I power-cycled the gateway as the manual suggested, waited five minutes, and everything came back. It turned out to be a loose network cable, not a battery failure. Since then I have kept the gateway plugged into a small backup UPS, and the system has handled two later outages without trouble.
For me, the biggest benefit is not independence; it is predictability.
