Ever since installing a 10-kWh solar battery in our garage, I have paid much closer attention to when our electricity is actually expensive. The biggest difference has come during summer evenings, when the air conditioner is still running but the solar panels have stopped producing.

Before the battery, our household routinely pulled power from the grid between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., exactly when our utility charged peak-hour rates. Now the battery starts discharging automatically at about five, and I can watch the energy flow on the monitoring app. On a typical hot weekday, it covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and most of the air conditioner. We still import a little electricity, but our evening usage has dropped dramatically.

Looking at the bills is the most convincing part. Our monthly summer bill fell from roughly $190 to $105, even though we used about the same amount of energy. In spring, when the battery fully charged most days, we had two bills below $70. It is not magic—the savings depend on weather, battery capacity, and the utility’s time-of-use schedule—but peak shaving is genuinely noticeable.

My one small troubleshooting moment happened after a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging overnight and showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway, checked the cable between the inverter and battery, and waited ten minutes. The warning cleared, although I had to re-enter our time-of-use settings in the app. That was annoying, but support answered my email the next morning and confirmed the fix.

When I was comparing systems, I searched for the “best inverter price,” but the lowest quote was not automatically the best value. I cared more about usable battery capacity, warranty, local support, and whether the solar inverter could handle our panel output.

After nine months, I am happy with the setup.
