Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
On most evenings, our house runs almost entirely from the solar battery after dinner, and that has made the biggest difference to our electricity bill. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive grid power between 4 and 9 p.m. My rooftop solar system usually fills it by mid-afternoon, then the inverter switches the battery to discharge as cooking, laundry, and heating start competing for electricity.
Before storage, I would watch the smart meter climb whenever we ran the oven and heat pump together. Now those same hours barely register any grid import. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $70 over the summer, even though we used the air conditioner more. The savings are not perfectly consistent because cloudy days leave less energy to store, but peak-hour battery discharge has been very noticeable.
The one hiccup happened during a firmware update. The battery stopped charging at 82% and showed a warning in the monitoring app. I first assumed something was seriously wrong, but the installer had me power-cycle the inverter and check the communication cable. After about ten minutes, charging resumed. That small scare taught me to keep the manual nearby and not panic over one odd app reading.
I also keep a simple eye on battery state of charge, especially before a rainy forecast. If it is below 35% by sunset, I allow the grid to top it up slightly rather than risk running out overnight. That setting is less exciting than chasing maximum solar self-consumption, but it gives me confidence the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and sump pump will keep working during an outage.
I have not needed replacement yet, and the solar lithium battery charger tops up my backup pack from excess solar. The win is fewer peak-rate purchases.
