I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. Before the battery, my solar panels exported a lot of power around lunchtime, then I paid full rates after dinner when the oven, lights, and heat pump were running. That felt backwards.
The setup was fairly straightforward, although the electrician spent extra time adjusting the inverter settings. We programmed the battery to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On cloudy days, I sometimes use grid charging before the peak period. I keep a lifepo4 battery charger 48v as a backup for testing and emergency charging, but so far the solar inverter has done nearly all the work.
The difference on my bill was noticeable immediately. My monthly electricity cost dropped from roughly $185 to between $105 and $125, depending on weather and heating use. The biggest savings happen on sunny days: the battery fills by mid-afternoon, then carries the house through dinner and most of the evening. I still send some surplus solar power back to the grid, but far less than before. Watching the energy monitor has also changed my habits. I run the washing machine and dishwasher during solar hours, while the battery handles the less flexible loads later.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in January. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though it showed 70 percent charge. I checked the app and found that a firmware update had reset the discharge schedule. After restoring the time window and restarting the solar battery system, everything worked normally.
The battery has not eliminated my bill, especially during several dark winter weeks, but it has made my solar investment much more useful. For me, the real benefit is predictable evening power and less dependence on peak electricity rates, without changing how comfortable our home feels.
