I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive grid electricity between 4 and 9 p.m. Our rooftop solar system was already producing more than we used at lunchtime, but without storage, that surplus went back to the grid for a fairly unimpressive credit.

The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, connected it to the main panel, and configured the energy management app. I chose a lithium iron phosphate unit with a titanium-colored casing—not a titanium battery, despite what the sales brochure’s wording briefly made me wonder. The important part for me was usable capacity, quiet operation, and a good battery warranty.

After a week of watching the app, I changed the charge settings. Instead of filling completely every day, I set a reserve of 20 percent for outages and let solar charge the rest. Around sunset, the battery takes over the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and usually our heat-pump water heater. During peak pricing, I now use very little grid power.

My first full bill with the battery was $68 lower than the same month the previous year, although weather and our habits obviously mattered. The bigger benefit is consistency: on sunny days, the battery regularly covers dinner, laundry, and the evening television without pulling from the grid. I have seen our evening consumption drop by roughly 70 percent.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery as “offline” after a router update. The battery itself was still working, so I did not panic. Reconnecting the Wi-Fi and restarting the monitoring gateway fixed it in about ten minutes.

So far, storage has not made us energy-independent, but it has made our solar investment much more useful during peak hours each day.
