Every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter climb during the expensive peak hours. We have rooftop solar, but without a battery, most of our daytime generation went back to the grid for a modest credit. Then I added a home energy storage system with a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a renogy inverter.
The biggest difference is how predictable our evenings feel now. Around sunset, the battery automatically takes over from the grid. It runs our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and usually the dishwasher. I also set the system to charge from solar first and reserve 20% capacity for outages. Before the battery, our summer bills averaged about $185. After installing it, they dropped to roughly $105, although weather and utility rates obviously change the numbers. I am not claiming instant payback, but avoiding peak-rate electricity has made a noticeable difference.
My favorite moment is checking the monitoring app and seeing solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption on one screen. On a sunny day, the battery is usually full by early afternoon, so we carry that energy into the evening instead of buying it back later.
I did have one minor troubleshooting issue during the first week. The battery stopped discharging after a firmware update, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I restarted the inverter and battery, then checked the operating mode. The system had switched itself to backup-only mode, probably because of the update. Changing it back to self-consumption fixed the problem, and it has been stable since.
For me, the practical benefit is not just lower bills. The solar battery quietly shifts energy to when we actually need it, and the backup power gives me more confidence during short outages. I still check the system occasionally, but most days it simply works in the background.
