Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
6 months ago I installed a 16kwh battery alongside my rooftop solar panels, and the biggest change has been how ordinary evenings feel. Before the battery, my house pulled expensive grid power from around 4 p.m. until bedtime. I could watch the solar inverter producing energy all afternoon, then lose most of it when the sun went down.
Now, the battery charges during the day and usually reaches full by late afternoon. At 5:30, it switches to battery power automatically, so cooking dinner and running the dishwasher happen without buying peak-rate electricity. My utility bill used to average about $180 in summer. Last month it was $112, despite using the air conditioner more often. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather, but that reduction feels real.
What I appreciate most is not just the monthly number; it's the quiet control. During a power outage last month, the lights stayed on and the refrigerator never stopped. I only noticed because the inverter app sent me a notification.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment: the battery stopped discharging one evening while the sky was clear. I checked the monitoring app and saw its reserve setting had been raised to 30% after a firmware update. I had expected it to hold 20%, so more stored energy was sitting unused. Lowering the backup reserve restored normal operation immediately.
I now keep that reserve at 20% because our outages are rare. The battery is wall-mounted in the garage, and installation was cleaner than I expected; the crew finished in one day and left the wiring tidy. The only ongoing chore is checking the app every few days and brushing dust off the inverter vents.
For anyone comparing solar battery systems, I would focus on usable capacity, not just the advertised size. That matters every evening.
