I installed my lifepo4 powerwall battery last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting painful. We have rooftop solar, but by dinner the panels were quiet and the house was pulling expensive grid power. The battery is a 10 kWh home energy storage unit, mounted in the garage beside the inverter. I chose lithium iron phosphate chemistry because safety and cycle life mattered more to me than squeezing out the lowest upfront price. The installer finished in one day, including a new backup-loads panel.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. My utility charges more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., so the battery now fills from solar around midday and carries our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat pump through dinner. Before installation, I was routinely buying 8 to 12 kWh during that window. Now that number is usually close to zero on sunny days. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly $70 to $95, depending on weather and air-conditioning, which feels more meaningful than the app's impressive graphs.
I did have one mildly frustrating moment in July. The battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the obvious things first: backup mode, state of charge, and the scheduled operating hours. Nothing looked wrong. A firmware update had quietly reset the time-of-use schedule, so the system thought peak pricing started later. After I rebuilt the schedule and restarted the inverter, discharge resumed immediately. I now glance at the settings after every software update, rather than assuming the solar battery will preserve them. This was not a serious failure, but it taught me that home energy storage still needs occasional attention.
Overall, this battery made solar useful after sunset, and peak-hour savings alone justify my decision to install it again.
